The Art of Finding Your Voice: Reflections from the Annual Debate Championship

Education involves more than just knowing the correct answer; it also entails gaining the confidence to ask the right question, being able to express one's ideas clearly, and listening carefully when someone views the world in a different way.

The spirit was on display at the Annual Debate Championship taking place at St. Xavier’s High School in Ghaziabad on 20 August 2026, with students from 45 schools participating in a lively exchange of ideas, perspectives and arguments.

The championship was more than just a competition; it showed how important communication, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue are throughout a student's learning journey.

Finding Confidence Through Expression

It is difficult for a great many young people to speak in front of an audience.

Debate offers students the chance to overcome their hesitation. Each argument presented, question replied to and viewpoint defended contributes to building their confidence.

It's not the aim of public speaking to turn every student into an orator; rather, it is to help students realize that their own ideas are worthwhile and to give them the confidence to express those ideas effectively.

That self-confidence eventually goes well beyond the stage and supports students in classroom situations, during interviews, in leadership positions and in ordinary conversations.

Learning How to Think

The true strength of debate is not just in speaking but in thinking.

To prepare for a debate students have to research the topic, look at the evidence, foresee the arguments that will be put forward by their opponents and arrange their thoughts in a logical way.

It encourages them to ask important questions:

Is the evidence reliable?

Could the problem be considered in another way?

In what way can an argument be made stronger?

What does the opposing side have to teach us?

As a result of this process, students go from just receiving information to analysing and questioning it.

That is a basic principle of critical thinking.

The Importance of Listening

Just as much as communication needs something else equally important, it also needs to listen.

A good debater should not just wait for a chance to speak; they need to understand the opposing side, identify the arguments it is making, and then respond in a thoughtful manner.

It therefore shows students that disagreement need not lead to disrespect.

Different points of view can exist, be challenged and be discussed in a constructive way.

The ability to listen patiently at the same time as expressing one's opinion with confidence is a valuable skill both in competitions and in everyday life.

Beyond Winning and Losing

Just like all the other championships, the Annual Debate Championship did more than celebrate performance and achievement. However, the deeper learning went beyond the final results.

All the students who took part in the programme had to put in the effort of preparation—which involved researching, practicing, polishing their arguments and learning how to communicate under pressure.

The fact that there were 45 schools taking part also provided a broader platform on which young people could come across different points of view and learn from one another.

The value of such an experience is therefore not merely to be measured in a trophy or in a result; it consists in the confidence, curiosity, reasoning and communication skills which students take with them.

Creating a Culture of Thoughtful Communication

In a world that is changing quickly, students will soon need to be able to tell the difference between information and insight, to communicate complicated ideas clearly, and to engage respectfully with those who have different opinions.

It is important for schools to provide opportunities which allow these abilities to grow naturally.

The Annual Debate Championship showed that a stage, a topic and the exchange of ideas can serve as a meaningful extension of classroom learning.

At St. Xavier’s High School in Ghaziabad a culture is being developed in which students learn to think deeply, speak courageously and listen respectfully, the Annual Debate Championship being one example of this philosophy.

The school is still working to provide students with chances to question, to communicate and to interact with a variety of different viewpoints, so that they may be prepared not only for examinations but also for the conversations, decisions and responsibilities that will be ahead of them.
